Figure 1 Our Family's Century Sugar Shack

Maple Sugar Socks

by Karin Bole

Difficulty: Advanced Beginner to Intermediate

These socks were designed for Socktoberfest 2006. The inspiration? The beautiful colours all around me at this time of year! The Gatineau hills are famous for the autumn foliage and a walk through the family maple bush is a treat. The socks are circled with a band of maple leaf motifs and have an Eye-of-Partridge heel with garter stitch banding.

Round 1: sl1, k2, p to last 3 sts, k2, p1

Round 2: sl 1, k2, (sl1, k1) across row to last 3 sts, k3.

Turn Heel: (wrong side facing), sl1, p16. p2tog, p1, turn work.

Next row: sl1, k3, ssk, k1, turn work.

Next row: sl1, p4, p2tog, p1, turn work.

Next row: sl1, k5, ssk, k1, turn work.

Continue in this manner, working to within one stitch of the gap from previous row and making decreases until all stitches have been incorporated. There should be 18 stitches remaining and you will have just completed a right side row, ready to pick up stitches for the gusset.

Gusset: With right side of work facing, pick up 17 stitches along edge of heel flap, work row 2 of the garter rib pattern across the 32 instep stitches, pick up 17 stitches along other side of heel flap, knit 9 stitches from beginning  of N1 onto end of N3. The stitches are now distributed as follows: 26-32-26. Knit one round then begin decreases as follows:

Round 1: k to last 3 sts of N1, k2tog, k1; work row 2 of garter rib across 32 instep stitches; k1st st N3, k to end of round.

Round 2: Knit all stitches.

Repeat these 2 rounds, maintaining pattern as set, until there are 16 stitches on N1 and N3 and 32 instep stitches.

Foot: Work even in established pattern until foot is  5cm / 2” less than desired length of foot.

Toe: Round 1: k all sts

Round 2: k to last 3 sts of N1, k2tog, k1; k 1st st N2, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1; k 1st  st N3, k to end of round.
